Nick and Nell on the Oregon coast

What are the details again?

We’re having a reception to celebrate our wedding at 11 am on Saturday, October 1st 2022 at Goleta Beach. The address is 5986 Sandspit Road, Goleta CA.

What’s happening Friday night (new and updated plan)?

John and Erma, Nick’s dad and step mom, were planning on hosting a catered dinner at their home in Goleta but so many folks were interested that we needed to find a bigger venue. So, now we will be partying on the patio from 5-8 pm at Timbers Roadhouse on the north end of Goleta: 10 Winchester Canyon Rd Goleta, CA 93117. Stop by for any or all of that time!

How do I get there?

The closest airport to fly into is Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) but depending on where you’re coming from it can be pricey and connectionful. Another option is LAX, which is about 2 hours drive from Goleta.

Where do I stay?

There are several hotels in Goleta within 3-5 miles of Goleta beach. Fancier options are the Best Western Plus South Coast Inn and the Hampton Inn Santa Barbara/Goleta. I’ve also stayed at the Motel 6 Goleta which was very simple but clean and comfy. There are also AirBNB options and tons of places to stay in the surrounding wine country and up the 101 in Lompoc.

What’s the venue like?

Goleta Beach is a county park on the ocean just east of UC Santa Barbara. Site A is the same pavilion where Nell had her PhD defense party. It is a few steps from the beach and a short walk from Goleta Pier. For instance: Goleta Beach Site A

Will there be food?

Yes, there will be food. We will have tacos plus tri-tip, chili rellenos, salads, and shrimp sides from Big Joe’s Tacos. Also cakes and beverages TBD.

Is there a sappy proposal story?

Nell knew for a long time that I would like to marry her. She waited, however, until I had been laid low and weak from food poisoning in a different city to propose to me with a family ring. At the time we thought I had the stomach flu, so she got down on one knee a good distance away, gave me the ring with her arms fully extended, and washed her hands afterward.

Is there a gift registry?

No. We are both well established and we understand that Santa Barbara is, though unintentionally, something of a destination wedding. The joy of your presence while celebrating our happiness is gift enough. Gifts will definitely be appreciated if that is your love language, but are explicitly not expected.

What do I wear to this thing?

Something that makes you happy! The average high for early October is 70°F. Nick is planning on a button up with vest and jeans, unless that would result in heat stroke. Nell’s thinking something in the “sundress” family. There is wadeable water nearby so keep that in mind. Do not wear your nice shoes, the ground is sand and grass!
